Basketball hoops

Outdoor basket selection guide

What to consider when choosing an outdoor basketball hoop?
Basketball stands differ in terms of construction, material and performance. Choosing the right rack will affect your playing experience and durability. This guide answers common questions and helps you find the right rack.

Three main types:

Portable stands
Advantages.
Disadvantages: not resistant to heavy use, such as docks.
Construction: plastic filling tank acts as a weight, usually fitted with wheels to facilitate moving.
Note: The tank should be emptied in winter to prevent freezing or filled with sand.

Ground-mounted racks
Advantages: sturdy and playable, can withstand heavy use.
Disadvantages: Requires concrete casting, permanent solution.
Construction: fixed post in concrete, can be fixed or adjustable height.
Note: Particularly suitable for permanent play areas, not movable.

Wall-mounted stands
Advantages: A good option if ground-mounted or movable is not possible.
Disadvantages: leaves permanent marks on the building, height adjustment usually more difficult.
Construction: wall or pole-mounted.
Note: Requires a sturdy anchorage and space on the wall.

Basketball basket parts:

Basket height adjustment:
Adjustable height (260-305 cm) is recommended, especially as children grow.
Mechanisms: telescopic, lifting stick, lever, counterweight, compressed air.

Pillar:
The sturdy pole reduces vibration and increases safety.
A single-piece pole is more stable than a multi-piece pole.
A square, thick metal pole improves rigidity.

Backing plate:
The material and size of the backing plate influence the behaviour of the ball.
Often rectangular, width 100-150 cm.
For added safety, there is cushioning at the bottom of the plate.
Choose a rack according to your needs, space and desired playing experience.
