FRISBEE GOLF DISC FLIGHT NUMBERS
Frisbee golf discs use flight numbers to describe the flight characteristics of the disc design. These include:

  • Speed
  • Glide
  • Turn
  • Fade

The speed of the puck is expressed on a scale of 1-14. Putters (1-3) are the slowest, but easy to throw straight. Approach discs (3-5) fly further but are more challenging to control. Distance drivers (6-8) are good for beginners. Long-distance drivers (9-14) require more throwing distance.
GLIDE
The glide describes the ability of the disc to stay in the air, on a scale of 1 to 6. A higher value means a longer flight, which is particularly useful for beginners.
TURN
Stability describes the behaviour of the disc at the beginning of the flight, on a scale of (+1) to (-5). A negative number means an understable puck that turns to the right at high speed (right-handed backhand) and is easier to throw straight. Underbalanced reels are suitable for beginners.
FADE
Fade describes the final turn of the disc, on a scale of 0-5. A smaller fade means a straighter final flight, which is advantageous for beginners. Reels with a larger fade are better upwind.

POWER
The weight of a Frisbee golf disc has a significant effect on its flight. A lighter disc, for example 20 grams lighter, can fly up to tens of metres further in the hands of a beginner. This is why beginners should choose a lighter disc. As your skills and throwing distance increase, you can move up to heavier discs.

Nowadays, you can choose the weight of your Frisbee golf disc from online shops, down to the nearest gram. The most common weight categories are Lite, 150-159, 160-164, 165-169, 170-172, 173-175, 176-177 and 178+ grams.

Lightweight discs(150-169 grams) are ideal for beginners, children and those throwing under 100 metres. They work well at slow casting speeds, downwind and uphill, but can be challenging to control in windy conditions.

The heavier discs are suitable for more experienced players and competitive players with throwing distances over 100 metres. They are more stable in the wind and easier to control.

Choosing your first disc: start with a 150-169 gram disc. These discs are well suited to beginners and provide long-lasting enjoyment. A lightweight disc will not hinder your play as you develop your skills, and many competitive players use 165-169 gram drivers for special situations, such as throwing into a downwind.
